Political Identity & Political Culture
"Surely we cannot be certain of our spiritual democracy when, claiming to melt the nations within us to a comprehension of our free and democratic institutions, we fly into panic at the first sign of their own will and tendency."
"Melting the nations within us" is referring to this country being a "melting pot" which is supposed to show that all nations are welcome and free to practice their cultural and spiritual beliefs. But, how can we be so sure of that when the minute a group of people practicing a certain religion, or someone of a certain nationality practice their traditions, the country goes into an up raw.
I chose this quote because it stuck out to me the most. My interpretation of this quote is exactly how I feel about America right now. We are all "free" to do what we please as far as religion and cultural traditions, we are supposed to be accepting of one another, however, that is definitely not the case. Everyone is in such a frenzy over what the next person is doing. We are never going to progress as a country if we say one thing and mean another. I feel everyone should be accepted no matter race, color or religion and how or when they choose to practice their beliefs and/or traditions.
